![]() Scaling, Root Planning and Pocket Irrigation
Periodontal gum pockets are full of bacteria and the waste products of the bacteria have infected the roots of the teeth. By smoothing the roots where the bacteria have been growing, and removing the irritants, we create the potential for healing gum shrinkage and reattachment of the gums to the teeth. This in turn reduces the depth of the "pockets" and in turn reduces the extent of any surgery which may still be necessary. While surgery frequently is needed after root planing, patients have less discomfort and less surgical involvement. By reducing the contaminants and the bacteria with scaling and root planing, there is also less chance of infection after surgery and healing is enhanced. Discomfort is usually minimal. Topical and local anesthetics and nitrous oxide analgesia can be used if desired for additional comfort.
