"Tennis Stuff"

1998: I have one word to say: DYNAMITE! We tied for second in the conference this year, with an 8-2 record - exactly the opposite of last year, which was 2-8. Talk about a come-back. NEXT year we'll go all the way. I can feel it in my tennis elbow. I played #4 singles this year, and wound up completely undefeated in the conference. I'm rather proud of that, as you can probably tell.

1997: We had a pretty disappointing season, mainly because of one disastrous event after another. Our number one player injured her ankle mid-season. We played maybe three matches where we had ALL of our starters. I "officially" played #6 singles, though I almost always wound up playing #4 and #5. And believe me - facing someone two slots higher than me is NOT an easy task. But I actually came out of the season with an 8-2 record.

Over spring break, the team goes to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina for our annual trip. What amazed me is that the whole place looks like one giant golf course, and is gorgeous. Here's a picture of the place we stayed in. Peaceful, isn't it? Looks can be deceiving. The sign on the left reads, "Beware of alligators." No kidding.

We have a lot of fun, play a lot of tennis (as in, about 8 hours a day), and (unfortunately for some of us who will remain nameless) get a lot of sun. We played matches against schools like Vassar, William & Mary, who are too far for us to play during the school year. Here's a picture of some of us on our last day there in 1997, when we treated ourselves to a seafood dinner, which we sorely deserved. Oh, by the way - don't pay any attention to the blonde in the upper left - she's not on the team. I'm the one in the middle.

Here's the 1998 team at the annual Swarthmore athletic dinner. It was our last fling, and our last time to celebrate with the two seniors who graduated shortly thereafter. Plus, we actually got to see each other in something other than those pesky short white skirts we have to wear during matches. I'm the second one from the right.
