Education

Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA. Graduated with Highest Honors with a Bachelor of Arts, May 2000. Major in Biochemistry. GPA 3.9/4.0

Research Experience

Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Scholar, Department of Chemistry, Swarthmore College, Summer '99

Thesis research (continued during '99-'00 year) on species specificity in acetylcholinesterase inhibition which has led to a paper (published in Molecular Pharmacology) and a poster which was presented at the American Chemical Society meeting in March 2000.

NSF Research Experience For Undergraduates Research Fellow, Department of Chemistry, Columbia University, Summer '98

I worked under Dr. Koji Nakanishi, doing some organic synthesis and spectroscopic work. The Nakanishi lab had previously come up with a method for determining the absolute configuration of chiral diamines using CD spectroscopy and a bis-ethylenediamine linked zinc porphyrin "tweezer". We extended the method to chiral hydroxy acids by derivatizing them with ethylenediamine to form an amino-alcohol, which was bound by the porphyrin tweezer giving a characteristic CD spectrum indicating the absolute configuration at the alcohol chiral center.

Research Internship, Life Sciences Consortium, Pennsylvania State University, Summer '97

Conducted research in the field of x-ray crystallography under Dr. Greg Farber. Worked on determining the crystal structure of a mutant of Human Carbonic Anhydrase III using a Raxis-III area detector and x-ray crystallographic software. Began crystallization test screens for a Ribonuclease mutant to determine optimal crystallization conditions.

Research Internship, Westinghouse Science and Technology Center, Advanced Materials Technologies Department, Summer '96.

Received internship after placing first on a test following the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute. Conducted research on current limiting polymers in the polymer science division under Dr. Howard Saunders. Was responsible for devising, synthesizing and testing new formulas for current limiting polymers. Also worked as part of a large team to prepare results for business partners and investors.

Other Work Experience

Writing Associate, Swarthmore College, Fall '97 to Spring '00

Part of Swarthmore College's Writing Associate (WA) program. In this program, each WA is assigned to a writing intensive course in the area of their specialty, and helps students revise papers for this class. In addition, associates spend an hour a week available for drop-in conferences with any student who wants help with their writing. Since my sophomore year I was a WA for general chemistry, organic chemistry biochemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Computer Consultant, Swarthmore College, Fall '96 to Spring '00

Throughout my entire time in college, I was employed by the campus computing center: first to be a consultant in the Mac computer lab on campus, then to help faculty troubleshoot their computers, and finally (from my sophomore year onwards) to help students in the dorms with their Macintosh computer problems.

Teaching Assistant, Swarthmore College, Fall '98 and Fall '00

I was a teaching assistant for a general chemistry lab and a biochemistry lab. This involved helping students in the lab carry out procedures correctly, figure out how to do calculations, and understand the theory behind the experiments. It also required the ability to deal with unexpected problems that came up during the course of the lab.
