Music I Listen To

When you are doing research, there are many important and perhaps expensive pieces of laboratory equipment that need to be used. However, none of them can compare in importance to the CD player, radio, or even MP3 player. I love science and doing research, but the process often involves very repetitive measurements and assays. Without music, scientists would go insane. And we wouldn't want that to happen.

The Indigo Girls

This duet, composed of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, has been my favorite musical group since I was in high school. Their songs range from acoustic folk-rock ballads to edgier electric stuff, but always with insightful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. I've been to 4 concerts of theirs, and its always quite an experience. They tell funny stories, and encourage everyone to sing along with the music.

R.E.M.

R.E.M. was the first band I saw in concert (in 1995 on the monster tour) and I saw them again in 1999 on the Up tour. I'd say that unlike the Indigo Girls, they aren't incredibly better in concert than on their CDs, but nonetheless the concerts were both amazing. I actually have an MP3 bootleg version of the 1995 concert I attended, and also of a number of other concerts; if you are interested in trading MP3 bootlegs let me know.

Other Bands

Lest you think I'm simply a two-band man, I assure you that I also like lots of other music. Bands/artists I enjoy include (in no particular order) Counting Crows, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Moxy Früvous, They Might Be Giants, Barenaked Ladies, Melissa Etheridge, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Rusted Root, Pearl Jam, U2, and countless others. And then there is classical music, but I won't even get into that.
