Chester Mural Collective

Bios of Chester Mural Collective Staff

Michelle McIver, Director

I was born and raised in Chester, and have been drawing and painting since I was a child. In addition to my work with the Collective, I have also done several interior murals for homes, and have shown my paintings at the Freeman Cultural Arts Center. As a resident, being able to give back to the city of Chester is very important to me. I am dedicated to creating positive change in the community and inspiring youth through art.

Sally O'Brien, Assistant Director

I grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and moved to Pennsylvania to attend Swarthmore College, where I studied Greek and Latin. I first started working with the Collective in the winter of 2006, when Anna Torres invited me to come help prime panels of parachute cloth. I continue to be inspired by the talent and perseverance of the youth we work with, and by the power of the collaborative mural-making process.

Anna Elena Torres, Director Emerita

Anna grew up in the Bronx, and first started working in Chester as a tutor and art teacher while attending Swarthmore College. She was the recipient of a Lang Opportunity Grant, which she used to start the Collective and support the creation of its first and largest mural. Her creative vision, perseverance, and dedication were indispensable; without Anna's years of hard work, the Chester Mural Collective would not exist at all.

Rebekah Rosenfeld, Volunteer Emerita

Rebekah worked with the Collective during the 2006-2007 school year, helping to supervise the Smedley after-school program. Her warm personality and knack for making students feel at ease were a valuable asset to our program. She is currently working for the Bethesda Project as a member of the Philly Fellows program.
