Overview

The current initiative would involve having 15 chickens that will be purchased as chicks from the Murray McMurray and brooded in Nicole Lewis’ garage under the approval of the Swarthmore College Animal Care Facilities in the fall of 2009. During this time, a movable coop will be built. Surrounding the coop will be solar-powered electronet fencing to create an easily movable pasture and to protect the chickens from outside predators. The coop will be located adjacent to the DuPont Parking Lot and moved daily to provide the chickens with new pasture.

By the spring of 2010, egg production will begin and eggs will be collected daily by student workers and sold to Dining Services. During the summer when Dining Services has a reduced demand for eggs, the eggs will be sold through Tom Forrest at the Swarthmore Farmer's Market, the Swarthmore Co-op, or to the Food Shelter in Chester.

In May 2010, a report will be made available to the college and community detailing the progress and outcomes of the Swarthmore Chicken project. Also in May, an oversight committee will meet to assess the project.
