After searching the State of CaliforniaÕs official on-line ÒCalifornia CodeÓ for references to hitch-hiking, I found no reference to the practice. This is not to say that cities, counties or municipalities may not have laws.
New Jersey
According to a state trooper there, hitching in NJ is illegal, as is picking up hitchers; both offenses are punishable with significant fines.
Utah
A cop in a town called Silverton or something like that told me that hitching is illegal in all of Utah, but he seemed happy to let me get out of his town whatever way I could.
