Europe

Szani Ferenc and his friend, Sue, from Hungary, describe their experiences...

In Europe it's really good to hitch-hike for long distances. For this purpose the borders help much. Here's an example. If you start from Budapest and want to go to France, you start in the western end of Budapest with a sign saying "Wien". But you don't go into Wien (it's hard to get out of there); you get off at the border, and start to hitch from the Austrian side of it. Here, you put a "D" sign with a circle drawn around it (this stands for Germany -- Deutschland), and you'll get a car which goes through Salzburg. You then get off at the border, and put a "France" sign. From here U can easily get to France.
In France you have to use signs too. Write the name of the city U want to go to, and below the name you have to write " S.V.P." , which is the French abbreviation of "please". This way U can Hitch easily in France, too.
We think that it's Germany where hitching is the easiest, but it's fairly easy in the other western-european countries, too. Don't hitch in the ex-Yugoslavia, or in Bulgaria. They say that in Ukraine and Belorussia it's possible, but dangerous. It's dangerous in Romania, too, and U have to pay the drivers when you get a ride. We haven't tried it in Slovakia, but it is said to be impossible. It's very good to hitch in Poland (as in Germany).
Now, about Hungary. It's not as good as in Germany, but better than in Spain, and the drivers are better than in Portugal. It's easy to get out of Budapest to any direction, and it's easy in the whole country. We usually don't use signs inside the country. The most difficult place to hitch is at Lake Balaton. This is a tourist center, but don't go there: it's not too good! In Hungary people usually speak english or german if they speak any. We think that U'd enjoy hitching here. This is a nice country.
What U really have to bring on your journey is a good map. If U speak English ( Ithink U do), U won't die in Europe.
If U want to know anything else about hitching in Europe, write us, or write us:
