cactus fairy

may, 2001

alternative version

Cactus fairy,
she walks so gracefully,
tiptoeing barefoot through a field of thorns.
There are flowers in her hair,
with ribbons bright with hope.

She runs,
ribbons dancing,
lilting through the sharpened blades,
bleeding merrily with every step,
eyes wide with belief.
Beg the cactus,
Do not harm me!
You with your tempting eyes,
green bejeweled gown,
hidden gifts like the thorns
even now slicing her feet.
Joyfully she laughs:
home is beautiful,
in sameness, safety she has always known.
A glance back, lingering,
refuse to leave.
See only ribbons waving,
shredding in hot angry breeze.
Blood seeps into grinning thorns,
and the cactus blooms
deep red.
