About Me

Katie
My legal name is Katherine Marie Saltanovitz; to the left is a picture of me on the Golden Gate Bridge in Summer 2003.

The Early Years

I was born on October 29, 1980 in Oaklawn, IL. I lived in Chicago with my parents until I was 9 months old, at which point we moved to Madison, WI. My sister Beth was born there in April 1983. I went to Marquette Elementary School for kindergarten and 1st grade. My dad was working towards his PhD in Economics, and my mom ran a day-care center out of our home. We lived in Madison until the summer of 1987, at which point we moved to Fort Wayne, IN. In Fort Wayne, I attended 2nd grade at Forest Park Elementary for 6 weeks, then transferred to Weisser Park Elementary. However, I was in a first-grade class there since there was no room in the second grade. Since it was a magnet school, my parents didn't mind too much. The following year I was promoted to third grade. The summer after 4th grade, we moved to Indianapolis, where I attended 5th grade at Allisonville Elementary, 6th-8th grades at Eastwood Middle School, and 9th-12th at North Central High School. I graduated as valedictorian of the NCHS class of 1998.

At the Moment

I graduated from Swarthmore College in June 2002, with a major in engineering, and then spent a month in England with my friend Joanna. I spent a year at UC Berkeley getting a MS in environmental engineering, and now I'm living in Boston and working for an environmental engineering consulting firm in Middleboro.

I have a 21-year-old sister (Beth Przybylski) who has been tooling around Europe for the last six months and will start her Junior year at Bard this fall, some parents (Michael Przybylski and Diana Saltanovitz); and two dogs, Louie and Aggie. There are pictures of the aforementioned (and more) on my Pictures page.

So the story about the last names. Yes, my parents are married, and to each other. My mom kept her name when she got married. My parents decided they would give their first child my mom's last name if it was a girl, and my dad's last name if it was a boy. So I got my mom's last name, and in the interest of fairness, my sister got my dad's.

More stuff about me seems superfluous. I took a bunch of classes at Swarthmore, especially science- and language-related ones. I was also fairly involved in the Swarthmore Protestant Community. They have a new web page now, but you can still see the one I designed here. I started Suzuki violin when I was 4, and still pick it up now and then (for proof, see the Baroque Ensemble and Orchestra pictures). More recently I've been into singing- I was in the "Con Amore" chorus in Krakow during spring of 2001, and this past year I sang with Bella Musica, a community group in Berkeley. In Cambridge I've been playing with the Cambridge Symphony, a low-pressure community orchestra, and singing with the University Lutheran Church choir.
