"Not All Who Wander Are Lost in Space" lyrics and music by Benjamin Newman / D - G D / - - G A / G D Bm - / G - A - / When we steered her from the junkyard she was nothing much to see With carbon-scored titanium, and lousy delta-V And a hyperdrive computer core so obsolete and old That we cursed the piece of junk that we'd been sold But she can surf the eddies like no other ship I've seen And when the jump drive's ready, and the indicator's green She can chart a course through hyperspace like it was in her blood Though in normal space she runs as quick as mud We had run a dozen cargos when things first got out of hand Near a long-abandoned planetoid she started in to land And asked if we would search the ruins for a crystal sphere Saying, "I don't recall quite where it was, I fear" Well, my foremost inclination was to tear the ship apart But, sifting through her memory, we found a stellar chart That couldn't have been current for a thousand years or more It was then that we agreed to go ashore / D GD GA D / G D G A / " / " / G D A D / Not all who wander are lost in space And it's not always to the swiftest ramjet goes the race Our ship's computer's winkin' at us from behind her interface 'Cause she remembers secrets that the stars forgot But she ain't gonna tell us if we're lost or not It was 'round about this incident that I began to guess That our old ship's computer core was on some kind of quest And maybe she'd an longer tale than we had first been told Could our ship be ancient, rather than just old? By our sixth our seventh artifact, we'd learned we weren't alone Our ship was not the only one to which this quest was known And I supposed the others must be faster ships than she And the ship's computer laughed: I must agree... but Not all who wander are lost in space... She said: They may be faster, but my chart is most complete I used to helm a forward scout ship of a long-lost fleet And even though this clunker hull seems fit to slow us down You know by now I know my way around I think that I can trust you to be told what this stuff's for Most of it's a weapon from a vast, eternal war But the parts that we've collected, they're not weapons parts at all They're jump drive parts -- and ready to install Not all who wander are lost in space... Then we powered up that jump drive for one, short hop Which took us clean across this galaxy where fools come out on top And any clunker cargo shell you pick up at the shop Could be a relic of an ancient race... And not all who wander are lost in space
