She fills a silver pitcher from the brook
Pours clear water in the basin and invites her guest to look:
In the mirror many visions you will see
Things that were and things that are and things that may yet come to be

To prevent the very vision you escry
But the mirror of the Lady does not lie

The hobbit steps up to the shining pool
Silence fills the forest, and the night is clear and cool
The shallow basin now seems deep and vast
His gaze is drawn beneath the surface and the vision holds him fast
And it shows him mighty fortresses, and armies on the move
'Til he starts in sudden sadness for the Shire that he loves
For the mirror seems to show him its demise
And he cries aloud:  Please tell me that it lies!

She says:  I have no words to reassure
For all things now are changing and none shall stand secure
The visions that the mirror shows are true
But the truths we touch depend so much upon our point of view
If you would see your country safely through the aftermath
Do not turn your feet to home but keep the eastward path
For I, too, have seen the Shadow has an Eye
Yet even He can't make my mirror tell a lie
