My good friend,Maureen Bulletti goes to Dartmouth, and
never wants to come home! Dartmouth College is a small Ivy League school
located in the mountains of New Hampshire in a small town, Hanover. I frist
heard about Dartmouth at a College Fair, and then I was lucky enough to meet
a great friend at Cornell University Summer College who lived near Hanover.
I visited my friend Marcus in September of 1995, and I fell in love with
Dartmouth. I applied early decision, and they deferred my application until
regular admission. Come April, they didn't accept me. Looking back, I'm
glad that I didn't wind up at Dartmouth, because I'm happy where I am now.
But, I still think it's a great school, and if you like cold weather, tons
of snow, and you're looking for a great education, take a look at Dartmouth.
My sister, Lawreen, is an alumna of Binghamton University. She
graduated in 1996, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management with a
concentration in Finance. I visited Lawreen many times while she was in
college and I thought that SUNY Binghamton would be a great school to go
to. It's a good thing that my sister graduated from college the same year I
graduated from high school, because she never would have let me go to
Binghamton. Anyway, SUNY Binghamton is located in Upstate New York, about
five minutes from the border of northern Pennsylvania. It's up in the
mountains, and they get tons of snow there too! They have lots of great
stuff going on at Binghamton both academically and socially. So, if you
live in New York State, or anywhere else, and want one of the best
educations out there, try SUNY Binghamton.
Boston
College is located just outside of Boston. I never got a chance to visit
BC, but I do know that they have a great program in education. Since I'm in
college to become a teacher, Boston College seemed like a great choice. I
have a couple of friends that attend BC right now - Liz Russo, andLauren Rennard. If you ever drop by
BC, look them up! Boston College is one of the oldest Jesuit Universities in
the nation, and they have a really attractive campus. Check them out!
My
best friend,Cheryl Ching, goes to Boston
University, and if you ask her about it, she just loves it! (sort of) No,
she really does! I never got to visit BU either, but last year, in October,
I finally made it up to BU and I stayed with Cheryl in her dorm. It was the
best college experience I have had outside of my current school. Cheryl
lived in a renovated hotel, and they had pizza bites (Cheryl mails me them
every month!) They have great food...and I mean great food. The school is
huge, but it's located right near the Charles River and the view is
specatacular from many places around campus. Cheryl tells me that, unlike
New York City, Boston does sleep, and the night life ends around 2 am. I
was there..and it's true. But, putting that aside, Boston University is a
great place to get an education, and a place to meet some cool people (like
Cheryl).
Why did I apply to Bucknell University? I don't
remember, and having not visited it, I don't know much about it. All, I do
know is that it is located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, in the middle of the
state. They offerred me a full scholarship and a stipend to do research at
Bucknell, but I turned it all down to attend Swarthmore. Bucknell looks
like it has a lot of great stuff going on, and I've heard that they are a
school big on athletics. If you want to go somewhere in the middle of
nowhere and play lots of sports, look at Bucknell!
I first went to Cornell during my
sister's college tour in 1991. She applied to Cornell, and I can remember
hiking up and down the hills there, paying absolutely no attention to the
tourguide because I was in eigth grade and could really care less about
College. In the summer of my junior year in high school, I returned to the
hills of Ithaca (and the mountains) for Cornell Summer College. While
there, I took two classes, English and Bioethics. I absolutely fell in love
with Cornell, and if they were more gracious with their scholarship, I
probably would have wound up there. But, I didn't...I can still dream about
the beautiful campus though. There are two divisions, the IVY part of the
school and the New York State Division of the school. There are seven
separate colleges on campus. I applied to the College of Life and
Agricultural Sciences. The school is beautiful, the food is great, and the
suicide rate is not as high as they say it is. Take a good look at
Cornell..it's amazing!
I never visited UPENN either. (notice a trend here? I never
visited anywhere!) But, I've been there many times since I had to make that
crucial college decision. My good friends Rosanna Hui, and Ari Bunim, attend the University of
Pennsylvania, and they love it. The last time I was there, I visited a
fraternity and I can't remember the name of it (does that give a hint about
how inebriated I was that night?). Anyway, UPENN is an extremely selective
IVY League school, and it's located right smack in the middle of
Philadelphia. The school is huge, and the dorms are kind of ugly, but the
education makes up for all that. If you want to go to a school in a city,
try UPENN.
I recieved the Xerox Scholarship to attend the
University of Rochester, and they flew me up there to see the school in
early November of my senior year. You can probably already tell that I am a
huge fan of cold weather and snow, but that morning in November really
turned me off to the sub-zero temperature climate. My stay at the
University of Rochester was far from exciting, and I really didn't like the
school (or my host for that night). But, one of my best friends, Marcus Jenkyn, attends the U
of R. He says it's ok. That was my impression- it's ok. It is one of the
top 50 universities in the nation, and they have some really good programs.
If you're interested in music, they have the famous Eastman School of Music
there. And, if you can stand freezing temperatures, look at the U of R.
It's really close to Canada too!
