Chronological breakdown of summer 1999 in South America:

June 30:
depart from LAX Terminal 7 on United Air
say good bye to family, friends and Los Angeles
July 1:
arrive in Sao Paulo, Brasil
settle into the IEHB Headquarters, acculturation,
say "hi" to old friends, try to meet new folks
July 2:
settle in at IEH Headquarters
training and team building
July 3:
leave for Itaquera Holiness Church
settle in with Pr. Hitoshi Saito and family
July 4:
first Sunday at church
attend service, get acquainted with people
July 5:
prepare for English classes
meet with Milka, Sylvia, Cristina and other
church leaders, go over registration, shop and prep
July 6:
English classes begin
prep in the morning, beginning English class
with children and youth in the afternoon, beginning
English adult class in the evening (Brian teaches
advanced English class)
July 9:
American Day
Everyone invited to the American theme day on this
holiday. Food, games, songs, my testimony, fellowship 
and plain ol' fun
July 10:
children's service, and fellowship
help Dn. Rosa with ministry with underprivileged 
kids in the neighborhood (breakfast, song, puppet show 
about Jonah, and crafts); soccer at the "kaikan"
July 11:
church and "Kodomo-no-sono"
participate in Sunday morning service, go to
Japanese community sponsored bazaar/fair to raise money
for school for children with Down's Syndrome
July 12:
day off
no classes, visit Liberdade (J-town in Sao Paulo)
July 16:
girls' night
end of classes; young women of the church 
sleepover at the Saito's place
July 17:
children's service and good-bye party
help with Dn. Rosa's ministry to the kids,
everyone from church and English classes gathers
for a party
July 18:
last church service at Itaquera
some folks from English class come to church 
(woo hoo! woo hoo!)
July 19:
transition to Adamantina
say good-bye to Pr. Saito, and hello Pr. Fujissaka
and Dn. Eunice at Bosque Holiness church, 6.5 hour
drive from Sao Paulo to Adamantina
July 20:
first day of English classes
children's beginning English class at 9am, play
soccer with the neighborhood kids until lunch,
another beginning kid's class at 2pm, evening  advanced
class cancelled, go see "the Matrix" with the Fujissakas
July 22:
Thursday night prayer meeting
attend and share at the evening prayer 
meeting at church, meet most of the congregation 
for the first time
July 23:
home group in Dracena
travel to the nearby town of Dracena for 
a monthly evening Bible study and prayer 
meeting at someone's home
July 24:
day camp and "kinenkai" for Erica Watarai
songs, games, Bible story and food at church 
for church and neighborhood kids; memorial service 
for a young woman of the church
July 25:
cRAzY Sunday
meet the congregation, share testimony, teach
children's Sunday school, travel to Dracena to attend
a "kinenkai" in the afternoon, attend evening service 
and baby dedication at Bastos Holiness church
July 27:
advanced class movie
watch "the Mummy" instead of the usual
evening class
July 29:
Thursday night prayer meeting
share, prayer and hang-out
July 31:
home group in Osvaldo Cruz
travel to the Aramaki family's grape farm in
Osvaldo Cruz for dinner and Bible study
August 1:
communion Sunday
everyone (including folks from Dracena
and Osvaldo Cruz) attends communion service,
all-church potluck and crafts
August 2:
day off
visit Panorama (Holiness denomination campground),
go fishing on the Parana River
August 5:
last day in Adamantina
final English classes, last soccer game,
Thursday night prayer meeting, visit homes
August 6:
leave on road trip
say good-bye to Adamantina, drive to the state of 
Parana, eat lunch in Maringa with folks from Maringa 
Holiness church, arrive in Laranjeiras do Sul, stay 
overnight at Dn. Eunice's brother's house
August 6:
more road trip
visit Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, stay 
overnight with family, visit Foz do Iguacu
August 9:
return to Sao Paulo
leave Laranjeiras, pass through Curitiba, 
arrive at Bosque Holiness church in late evening
August 10:

debriefing with remaining JEMS team, hang out
with friends at Bosque
August 12:
leave Brasil
say good-bye to people from Bosque and Itaquera
at the airport, get on airplane
August 13:
arrive in Los Angeles
enjoy home, miss Brasil and prepare to return 
to Swarthmore by the 18th
