Swarthmore Men's Soccer's new coach, Eric Wagner, comes from a strong program at
St. Mary's College in Maryland. In just five seasons with the Seahawks soccer team, Coach
Wagner has made the program a winner. The 2001 season was a
watershed performance for the Seahawks, as the team won
more games than any team in the program's 30-year history
(14) and finished with the team's best Capital Athletic
Conference record (5-2, 3rd).
During Wagner's tenure, the Seahawks have gone 49-42, for a .538 winning percentage.
Prior to his arrival, St. Mary's was 84-157-15, for a .357 winning percentage.
Emphasizing intelligent, creative play, an honest work ethic, and hard-nosed defending,
the former Seahawks' coach will be coming to Swarthmore to continue the development
and growing success of the Swarthmore program.
In 1997, Wagner came to St. Mary's College as the school's first-ever full-time soccer coach. Formerly the head soccer coach at Southwestern University in Texas, Wagner brings a wealth of experience to the Seahawks' program. In 14 years of coaching college soccer, he has gained a reputation as a top-notch recruiter and developer of talented young soccer players.
Following a four-year playing career at Connecticut College (B.A., 1988), Wagner assisted with the women's soccer team the Camels won the school's first ECAC Championship in 1988. Following a one-year stint as the assistant coach at Wheaton College (Mass.), Wagner became the assistant coach at Duke University in the nationally renowned Atlantic Coast Conference. While in North Carolina, Wagner coached the U-16 Raleigh ISA boys' club team to the 1992 State Championship.
Wagner served as the assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame in 1992-93. He also served as a staff coach in the Indiana Olympic Development Program. In 1993, Wagner moved to Texas to start the varsity program at Southwestern, where he also worked as a South Texas O.D.P. staff coach. Wagner earned the Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 1992 and is pursuing a master's degree in education.
Wagner is active in the Southern Maryland soccer community, running camps and clinics throughout the year, and serving as the Director of Coaching for the Southern Maryland
District Development Program.
Coach Wagner's playing experience includes four years of Division III college
soccer, a one-year stint with the HSC team in Heidelberg, Germany, two seasons in Division I men's amateur soccer in North Carolina (including the 1992 N.C. State Championship), a year in the Division II semi-pro Connecticut Soccer League, and two years of Division I soccer in Austin, Texas. He has also coached baseball and tennis at the college level.
