Mission Statement: Ñ

(Spanish-language literary magazine) ~ ~ ~ Drafted by Alicia Muñoz, Sabrina Parra-García and Martin Rio October 27, 2000

The mission of "Ñ" is to create a new literary space in the Trico community for creative writing in Spanish. "Ñ", a biannual publication, will be created for Spanish-speakers on campus, non-native and native alike. The magazine will contain poetry, short essays, and short stories. All interested members of the Tri-college community are invited to submit works for publication. Students, staff, or faculty of American, Latino, or international ethnicity are especially encouraged. "Ñ" will allow native speakers an opportunity to publish in their native language, and students of Spanish a chance to explore writing in their second language. The publication will be distributed at no charge within the Trico community.

Currently, there is no publication in a foreign language at Swarthmore College, nor has there been a collaborative effort between the student bodies of the Trico community for a literary work. Very few universities, let alone small liberal arts colleges, sponsor publications in foreign languages; such a publication here would place our multi-college community at the vanguard. "Ñ" will expand the cultural horizons of the institutions involved and increase their appeal to outside intercultural communities. The magazine will expand intercultural dialogue both nationally and internationally. Nationally, the Latino contributions to literature are increasingly being appreciated. Internationally, being Spanish a language of many different cultures, having people contributing from their perspectives will foster understanding and cooperation.

The new publication "Ñ" will increase the literary diversity of the Tri-college community, while showcasing a unique perspective and level of collaboration never explored here before. Not only will it provide a medium for expression in a non-majority language, but it will increase communication and awareness between the Spanish and English-speaking communities.
