Meet Mandara Meyers!

Mandara Meyers Õ99 has worked extensively on a one-on-one basis tutoring and counseling children with learning and emotional disabilities. She also coordinated the peer tutoring efforts at her high school. Here at Swarthmore, she has participated in three CIVIC programs specifically focused on childrenÑthe Homework Enrichment Program (HEP), the Urban Gardening Group (UGG), and Chester Tutorial. Her approaches to teaching children have ranged from dance and movement classes to writing workshops to outdoor education. MandaraÕs academic and career interests are oriented around gender relations; at home she is a junior commissioner on the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women. She spent the summer of 1996 working as an intern and paralegal at a civil rights law firm which specialized in sexual harassment both at school and in the workplace, and racial and gender discrimination in employment. Thus, she brings to the program a special understanding and perspective of how the issues adolescent girls are just beginning to face will continue to affect them throughout their lives.
