Meet Erica Turner!

Erica Turner Ő99 has had a variety of experiences working with children as young as 3 months, as well as with high school and college aged students. In the past she worked for several summers as preschool teacherŐs aide. She was also a peer tutor in middle and high school, and last year tutored middle and elementary school students through the Homework Enrichment Program (HEP). Last summer she worked as an academic counselor at a symposium on government for high school students, which entailed living with twenty girls and leading discussions on California state government. This school year she works with Swarthmore students as a Writing Associate. EricaŐs academic interests include gender issues, education, and social justice. Erica hopes to use her knowledge of government and politics, as well as her experience from being news editor of the Phoenix, to help the girls understand how issues such as government and media effect their lives. After graduation Erica hopes to incorporate ideas about gender and social justice into teaching or work in education reform. She hopes that this program will give her additional experience teaching and working with adolescents. She also hopes that the program will be an opportunity for her to apply concepts from her theoretical Swarthmore education in the real world.
