Swat Foundation Grant Taxes

Subject: Taxes, Summer of Service, Swat Foundation

Happy New Year!

This is going to students who received Swarthmore Foundation Grants
or Summer of Service Grants during the previous calendar year. This
includes the most recent Swarthmore Foundation Grant recipients if
you received your check before Dec. 31, 2001.

The Internal Revenue Service considers these grants and stipends as
income to you in the form of scholarship funds, and they should be
included on your income tax return as such.

Swarthmore Foundation grantees only may reduce the amount they claim
by the amount spent on supplies and equipment for their programs (not
personal expenses). For example, if your grant was $1500, and you
used $1000 for living expenses, and $500 for program expenses, you
should claim only $1000 as income. BUT you must be able to document
these expenses with receipts.

I don't know yet if we have someone on campus who is doing tax
advising, but as soon as I find out I'll let you know.
