Today: Mostly sunny, high around 40.
So various people are attempting to save SEPTA. Tonight: Mostly clear, low around 20. This is a plan I fully support... Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, high around 40. After digging out a friend's car with only ice scrapers to aid me, public transportation into Philly sounds more appealing than ever. |

At their weekly meeting last night, members of Student Council passed a resolution stating their committment to the efforts to save SEPTA. The text of the resolution is reproduced below.
Whereas the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) provides vital benefits to workers, school children, senior citizens, businesses, and the environment; and Whereas SEPTA is especially vital to the operations of Swarthmore College; providing students, faculty, and staff with convenient transportation, and drawing prospective students and faculty to the College; Whereas SEPTA is confronted with a budget deficit of between $62 and $65 million that will lead to a 20% reduction in services and a 30% to 40% fare hike ; Whereas SEPTA receives one of the lowest levels of dedicated funding from state and local government of any public transportation system in the United States; Whereas members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, members of the SEPTA Board, and Governor Ed Rendell have offered fair, sustainable solutions to the current funding crisis, including HB #22, which establishes a dedicated funding source for public transit in the Commonwealth of Pennyslvania ; and Whereas Swarthmore College endeavors to be a responsible member of the larger community, Be it resolved that the Student Council of Swarthmore College supports the implementation of a dedicated funding source for SEPTA that will prevent any service cuts or fare hikes; and Be it further resolved that the Student Council of Swarthmore College calls upon the Office of the President of the College to review its position towards the enactment of a dedicated funding source for SEPTA. |

Pope John Paul II was rushed to the hospital late Tuesday night. A Vatican spokesman said that the
pope, who had been suffering from the flu since Sunday, experienced a breathing crisis on Tuesday.
He is being treated at Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital, and all of his Wednesday appearances have
been cancelled. The 84-year old pope also suffers from Parkinson's disease.
For the second time in three years, King Gyandera of Nepal has disbanded that country's government and declared a state of emergency. Leaders of both of the country's parties, the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal were being detained in their homes. Phones are no longer working, and no flights are going in or out of the country. In his announcement disbanding the government, the King accused the country's leaders of not holding parliamentary elections and being unable to restore peace. The country has fighting a Maoist insurgency since 1996, and various previous attempts at multiparty democracy have also failed. The United States Senate deliberated on Tuesday over whether to confirm Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General, replacing John Ashcroft who held the job during the first Bush administration. The Senate vote on his confirmation was expected to happen Tuesday, but is now delayed until at least Thursday, and possibly later. Republicans accused the Democrats of delaying the vote because they did not want President Bush to be able to hail the new Attorney General during the President's State of the Union on Wednesday. Democrats denied this accusation, instead agreeing with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) that during his time as White House Counsel, Judge Gonzales had "tarnished our country's moral leadership in the world and put American soldiers and American citizens at risk." |
