NBA logo tutorial

for this tutorial, i'll use an image i found in google images by searching for 'shaq, nba' but the same method outlined here will apply to any image you choose.

shaq

1. first select the player(s) using the lasso / marquee / quick selection tools (my favorite)

2. then make sure to refine edges for smoother edges (I used smooth: 2, contract/expand: +10% and everything else 0)

3. create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N)
and make the background image invisible to make life easiernba logo

4. now, fill the new layer with the paint bucket or brush with white
select inverse and fill with red

(note: i used different colors but i think the official rgb colors are D30529 and 0E499D)
(also note: be careful with filling, i unselected the contiguous option)

5. after filling with red, use the polygonal lasso tool and hold shift to subtract from selection one of the sides. if i were you i'd get rid of the east side :P

6. now you're ready to replace the red with blue. i recommend using a brush to do that, but feel free to use the paint bucket.

7. deselect everything and select a bounding box such that the red and blue don't touch each other
this is where we create the smooth corners. do the following:

7.1. Select->Modify->Smooth... (use 5,10, whatever you like for the radius)
7.2. Select Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I)
7.3. Delete (Delete :p)

8. as a final step you can put the NBA text there, but i think it's fine without
