| My Barrio |
I'm from East Los Angeles, a city that is predominantly Mexican. I am part of the majority when I go home, but a minority nonetheless when I'm at Swarthmore. I'm a city girl and some might even say from the ghetto. But it's home. I've lived in L.A. since I was born.
Spanish is the predominant language back home and I'm proud to be a native speaker of it. That's why I wish to major in Spanish and Education with a concentration in Latin American Studies. I want to learn all there is about my culture. I want to be able to fill in the gaps between my parent's stories and the history of Mexico. This are my roots and so I feel its important for me to learn them. There are times when I miss my Latino world. The taste of Mexican food, the language, music, and Latino faces all around. It's home to me and I like being there but at the same time its hard to say whether I will spend the rest of my life there. Whether I will decide to go back at the end of this path or will choose a different path. All I know is that I will always call L.A. home.
