The great whopping life story of Jane Yuenkay Ng... ... began on the mid-summer morning of July 11, 1979. I was born in the then-British colony of Hong Kong, the Pearl of the Orient, a place where the East and West meet and mix in its bustling streets. I have very fond memories of my childhood days at home on the 23rd floor, watching the Pacific waves from the confining space of the balcony....trying to climb inside the huge bird cage my father made up on the roof garden...playing hide and seek with my sister behind my mom's beloved bamboo shrubs...I loved that place I called home, I was from its soil and my blood has its roots. |

| There I thrived for 14 years, surrounded by great friends from Diocesan Girls' School, until the summer of 1994. That summer after Form III was truly a turning point in my life, due to political situations my family decided to move to a new place -- Vancovuer, Canada. With only a few months' notice, I said goodbye to my friends, my culture and my homeland and journeyed to the other side of the Pacific... | ||||||||||||||

Change is always a challenge, but just like plants in a new pot, new parts of oneself stem out when one is placed into a new environment. It did take me some time to adapt to my new home, from the tiniest thing like "eraser" (not "rubber") to finally having a national anthem, but I managed to settle down and grew to love the beauty of Vancouver. It was hard learning to live without the entire family around -- my sister Stephanie was away at University of Chicago and my dad had to continue working in HK, only to visit 4 times a year -- but distance only made me cherish them so much more. During my three years at Eric Hamber Secondary School, I opened my up my eyes and learned a lot from my friends, and most importantly discovered a lot of myself I never knew existed. |

It is most interesting how dynamic life is. Yup, I have moved again and have actually graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, USA. Swarthmore is a truly amazing liberal arts college which is located just outside Philadelphia. I changed tracks from being a strict engineer to being a Honors Major in Studio Arts with a Honors Minor in Engineering (Visual Information Systems - a combination of Computer Graphics and Computer Vision). For my Honors major, I did my exams on Figurative Works (painting and sculpture) and 17th Century Dutch art. Phew. When I'm finally over the stress/pain of those days, maybe I'll post my essays up. Right now, I'm living in San Francisco (yup, moved *again*) and working at Electronic Arts Redwood Shores as a video game artist. It definitely uses both sides of my brain, so I consider myself very lucky to have sorta "found my calling". I am proud to do my part in balancing the gender gap in game developing a little bit! In my spare time I do chinese martial arts with Patti Li. She is awesome and you can find her here. Well, that's about it for now...
