Selected through a competitive process to interview prospective students. Responsible for writing a summary of each interview for the student's admissions folder to be used by the admissions selection committee. Organizer of Spring Pre-Frosh Weekend for Students of Color. Planned and emceed one highly-attended open microphone poetry night per semester. Advocate for socio-economic and minority diversity as student representative of the College's long-term Admissions planning committee. Tourguide for weekly campus tours. Co-facilitator of information sessions with Admissions Deans. Organized programming and logistics for Fall "Swat Discovery Weekend" for prospective students of color.

Student Council. College Planning Committee (CPC) Representative. Swarthmore College. (January 1999 - May 1999)
Student-elected to the CPC and Student Council as a write-in candidate with 50% of votes in a four-person race. Advocated for an increase in racial minority involvement in "traditional" school governing bodies. Organized and facilitated the Student Council Planning Retreat. Successfully placed student activities space and facilities/capital funding for the Intercultural Center on long-term and short-term funding agenda.

Respect, Safety, Unity Rally. Organizer. Swarthmore College. (November 1998)
Primary facilitator of vision and organization of an unprecedented student rally to respond to "ethnic intimidation" vandalism at the Intercultural Center (IC). Led over 150 students in media/campus outreach, creating a statement of goals and producing rally programming in three meetings within a 3-day time span. Processed and individually responded to numerous suggestions, criticisms and concerns from students, administrators, staff and faculty throughout planning process. At a school of 1300 students, over 400 on- and off-campus participants attended the rally. Emcee of rally.

Swarthmore Asian Organization (SAO). President. Swarthmore College. (December 1997 - December 1998)
Planned, promoted, and conducted weekly board meetings, and general meetings dealing with sensitive identity issues. Doubled average member participation at SAO meetings. Produced outreach materials for and assisted with recruitment and admission of Asian American students. Advocate for faculty and curricular diversity. Advisor to Deans Advisory Council, Intercultural Center Advisory Council, ADVICE (Coalition of ethnic and religious student groups), and Diversity Coalition. Personal and academic mentor for Asian American underclassmen. Co-Founder of ADVICE.

Tri-College Institute for Students of Color. Organizer/Counselor. Swarthmore College (August 1998)
Led over 70 racial minority entering freshmen through one week of reflective, discussion-based workshops about sensitive personal experiences regarding race, gender, sexuality, immigration, academics and class. Organized nightly social activities and maintained a positive residential hall experience.

Intercultural Center (IC). Intern. Swarthmore College. (September 1997 - May 1998)
Liaison between the Asian-American, Latina/o, Gay/Lesbian/Transgender organizations, and Black cultural Center organizations. Organized and promoted well-attended lunch discussions with off-campus speakers on IC Issues. Coordinated interviews, evaluations, and hiring of 9 IC staff members from a pool of 30 applicants. Conducted training and periodic on-duty guidance for staff. Increased staff productivity by reducing the number of Associates hired from 20 to 9, reduced shifts from 25 to 10, more than doubled length of shifts, and added a requirement to volunteer for at least one IC event per month. More than doubled attendance at all events.

PUBLIC POLICY

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Policy Analyst. Philadelphia, PA. (September 1999 - March 2000)
Used web research and government contacts to gather current information on the status of "academically bankruptcy schools" state legislation. Identified central research published on "bankruptcy" laws. Produced comprehensive charts outlining key legislative features and concerns of head ACLU Pennsylvania legislative lobbyist.

Federal Defender Training Group and Public Defender Service. Intern. Washington, D.C. (January 1999)
Shadowed Swarthmore alumnae to learn about criminal justice system and the life of public defenders. Edited and reviewed proposal on drug sentencing guideline reform for a national "Drug War" reform coalition.

Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP). Intern. Los Angeles, CA. (May 1998 - August 1998)
Witnessed day-to-day operations of leading Asian Pacific American organization. Provided administrative support for Leadership Development Seminars for Asian Pacific business and higher education professionals, and the annual Leadership Awards dinner.

UCLA Department of Graduate Studies. Research Assistant. Los Angeles, CA. (May - August 1998)
Learned and provided feedback about current status of Ethnic Studies programs at UCLA. Created database and reported analysis of backgrounds of graduates in African-American Studies, American Indian Studies, and Asian American Studies masters degree programs for Professor/Graduate Studies Dean Shirley Hune.

Women's Law Project. Intern. Philadelphia, PA. (March 1998)
Experienced the non-profit, legal services work environment. Observed coalition-building efforts of community-based organizations working on domestic violence in racial minority and immigrant Philadelphia communities. Reorganized and revised the divorce law manual, used by legal services counselors, to be more user-friendly.

WRITING/EDITING

Writing Center. Writing Associate (WA). Swarthmore College. (September 1998 - present)
Selected by faculty to study effective methods for tutoring peers in the writing process. Staffed the drop-in Writing Center. Responsible for holding over 25 individual conferences per semester to peer-edit student writing in Economics and Political Science. "WAed" a Senior sociology thesis on race in the criminal justice system of California. Writing Mentor for two struggling students to provide personal and on-going attention.

The Phoenix and The Daily Gazette. Opinions/Contributing Writer. Swarthmore College. (January 1997 - present)
Raised consciousness on "cultural politics" through reporting on-campus events for The Daily Gazette school e-mail news and contributing opinions and news to The Phoenix weekly school newspaper. Currently writing bi-weekly The Phoenix opinions column on "cultural politics" for the 1999-2000 school year.
