This jibes with the timing of the Danawell renovation; the first students moved into F-f-f-uck-You in Fall 1994, yes? As I remember it, there was never a formal agreement with CP&P or Teddd about it; when Teddd told us Hallowell basement was going away (Spring 1993), we asked him if we could have a new place, and he said, in essence, "How about this room in TIC? As long as you keep it tidy, since CP&P will be holding interviews there, you should be able to use it." (pause) ...Okay, having done some actual research, I return. In my SWILnews of 4/1/93, I say: "The George C. Hurliman Memorial Library will definitely need to be moved somewhere next year (as it will soon be a dorm room), and Teddddd Goundie has offered a small room beyond Dead Dog Kitchen in ML for our use. It is dusty and full of junk, but Tedddd has offered to clean it up for us if we decide to use it. I suppose people should take a look at it, so we can have some sort of voting or something about it, within a week or two." This was deemed unsuitable, so Jim MacLeod (who had been delegated unto) asked Teddd about a Suicide Single in Bond, after which Teddd promised to look into it. Here's his eventual reply, from 5/13/93: >Dear Jim: > >The best space I can come up with now is the band room in Tarble in >Clothier--Rm 306. This would be for storage of the SWIL library over the >summer, until we could identify a suitable space. Let me >know if you need anything else. > >Tedd (Trivia time: this is also, apparently, about when Jed stopped calling himself "Jedediah Elysdir Hartman" in email communications!) So, George was moved to Tarble at the end of Spring '93 (which explains my mom's assistance, since she was there to help me move) -- but not into its current home, 312. George was temporarily stored in the Sound Machine's room in TIC for the summer, while we sorted out its permanent home. The first mention in fall '93 comes in my SWILnews of 9/16/93: "The George C. Hurliman Memorial Library Memorial Library may or may not have found a home. We have apparently been promised space somewhere in Tarble, but, thanks to Heisenberg, do not know exactly where." Two weeks later, on 9/27/93, Jim M. forwarded this message from Teddd: "I have learned from Career Planning that Tarble 312 is the one they use least, and therefore the best one for 'George.' Perhaps you would like to go and take a look." Jim Mac. specifically mentions non-book items ("ambiance material") in this communication with Teddd: (Jim Mac., 9/27/93) > > A while back I'd heard that the SWIL Library (a.k.a. the George C. > >Hurleman Memorial Library for reasons which go beyond the scope of this > >message) had actually found a home "somewhere in Tarble, in the room that > >CPP will use for conducting interviews." I've also been informed that our books and > >"ambiance material" (e.g. the battleaxe) are no longer in as great a shape > >as we left them, i.e. we need to move the library while it still exists. By the end of November, things started to be settled; as of 12/10/93, I was saying "In other news, George is now definitely the future occupant of Tarble room 312. Once Jim MacLeod has the key and all that good stuff, we will move everything that is currently George from George's current location to George's future location." In my last SWILnews (12/20/93), I say, "George will be moved into Tarble 312 the week we get back, assuming Jim [MacLeod] ever gets the key," so things were eventually worked out. Then, the saga of the key begins. The Lesley/Don SWILnews from 2/18/94 says, "George is in Tarble," after a bunch of us helped move things down the hall, but we couldn't get into it without calling Security. George is a problem again on 2/25/94: "George is a problem again. Charles [Danforth] is talking to Tedddd"; this had to do with getting a key, and where it could be stored. (Teddd wanted it to be stored in Ben West, which we thought was silly; we wanted it to be stored in Locker 42.) Finally, on 3/4/94, Lesley and Don say, "Tedddd is giving us the key on condition that we share the room with the people who do RA interviews and such." After that, things apparently settled into the current configuration: George was in 312, the key was in 42, and there was continuing tension with CP&P about tidiness (including a point in May when CP&P got annoyed and tidied up George on their own). So: for more information, y'all should ask Jim Macleod (who was in charge in Fall '93), Charles Danforth (who was in charge in Spring '94), and Lesley-n-Don (who were co-presidents during the final stages). Some of them might have additional communications from Teddd that we can use as petards for the purpose of hoisting. There was definitely never any mention of "just books" on my watch, though; if Teddd says a library implies only books, point him to the various art objects and goodies in McCabe...or at least the email from Jim MacLeod that mentions the battle-axe. (I can forward the complete text, with Teddd's reply, if need be.) ----j7y
