Retreats

What do we do on retreats?

One Saturday each semester, we go to Willistown Meeting and spend the day in discussion, singing, sharing meals, silent reflection, and generally relaxing and enjoying a break from Swarthmore. We usually leave around 9 am and return by 10 pm (so you can still see the Saturday night movie or hit all the parties).

Retreat Themes

Pauline and the stewards take responsibility for organizing and leading most of the retreat activities, but usually the whole group discusses which theme we'd like to have. These range from the more conventional to the rather unique (which is what happens when we can't decide on just one theme).

Some Past Themes:
  • Ways of Prayer
  • Jesus, Sainthood, and Sexuality
  • God in Nature
  • Love
  • Forgiveness

Foodis also an important part of any retreat. We usually exchange meal numbers at Sharples for breakfast and lunch (bagels and sandwiches), and then several people collaborate on cooking dinner. In the recent past, we have had such delectable dishes as:

  • Lasagna
  • Stir-fry
  • Rhubarb cobbler
  • Nectarine tart
  • Cheesecake
  • Chocolate zucchini cake
