What exactly does "Caritas" mean?

Caritas is a latin word meaning "charity and love". It is taken from our theme song, the Taize chant "Ubi Caritas."

 

Are SPC and Caritas the same group?

Yes. The change to "SPC" came in 1998 when the student leaders of Caritas decided that the group needed a more descriptive name. Too many people seemed to think that Caritas was a Hispanic students' organization or simply had no idea what kind of group it was. Hopefully, the name "Swarthmore Protestant Community" is less confusing, although "Caritas" has stayed on as our official nickname and is still used by many people. For example, the names are used interchangeably throughout this web site.
