Letter: Dangerous Sentiments Expressed at Meeting

An unnamed student voiced a very dangerous sentiment at the Student Council meeting on Monday, March 30. The student expressed his extreme displeasure with The L-Word's coverage of the Laura Barandes incident and went on to say that he did not appreciate that his parents' money funded publications that he disagreed with, such as

The L-Word. The latter anti-free speech sentiment should disturb every Swarthmore student, conservative or liberal, pro- or anti- L-Word.

But it should especially disturb conservative students. Why? Because student groups depend on funds, yes paid for collectively by our parents. If we were to worry about opinion politics when dispensing funds and have a campus-wide vote in which people checked the names of the groups they agreed with most, and get rid of the ones that did not get over 50% political loyalty, The L-Word would hardly be the first group to go. In fact, the first groups to go would be the ones in the political minority.

Personally, I believe all groups should have the power of expression, whether I agree or disagree with them, as I'm sure most Swat students believe. But I was disturbed not to hear anyone respond this way when the statement was made.

So unnamed student, remember: if you want to keep the power of mouth, keep mouth and money separate.
