L-Word Focus: Tuition

Over the last 27 years, tuition has skyrocketed to nearly $30,000 annually. During the same time, however, per student spending has gone up even faster, reflecting increased financial aid expenditures, new spending on facilities and increased services. These additional funds come mostly from tuition revenue, our ever-ballooning endowment, and annual giving.

Our constantly escalating tuition puts a heavy burden on families attempting to finance a Swarthmore education. But it also helps the College provide increased financial aid to expand socioeconomic diversity, wire our campus, and hopefully build the new student center we deserve. This is a tradeoff that we should all examine closely.
