"The cruel and unusual reality of the death penalty" by Cameron McGlothlin

Cameron draws on his own experiences with capital punishment to tell us why it's wrong.

"In politicians, look for substance over labels" by Matt Van Itallie

Matt uses Senator Paull Wellstone to demonstrate that it doesn't matter whether we call ourselves liberal, but how we act.

"Ebonics debate neglects real issues" by Amy White

Amy talks about what's really important in the Ebonics debate and how's it been obscured by the media.

"The death of true reform measures: What happened to the great health care debate?" by Dan Fanaras

Dan shows how we actually began to talk about the real problems with the health care market, but we quickly moved on to other issues. The problem is that it's not fixed.

"Bill Clinton is not, was not, and never will be a liberal" by Ben Fritz

Liberals should have no hope for the "man from Hope," says Ben.

Modern liberalism: Perversion or Liberation?

"True liberalism protects the individual freedom of all citizens" by Brian Schwartz

"Simplistic definitions of freedom neglect social realities" by Matt Hellman

"2000 Presidential race: Progressives doomed already?" by Brendan Nyhan

Even though it's only 1997, the presidential race for 2000 is gearing up, and the Brendan sees the likely Democratic candidates as depressing for most liberals.

"Where did citizenship and political discourse go?" by Wendy Lawrence

Model citizen (and "A" student in Civics class) Wendy discusses post-election feelings and the future of democracy.

"Progressive change halted by institutions" by Ben Fritz

Back for more, Ben argues that the Left focuses its energy on the wrong places. Real power is not in the politicians, but the institutions that surround them.

"Hysteria and half-truths obscure truth behind global warming" by Josh Miller

Environmental concerns over global warming have become so extreme, according to Josh, that they ignore most scientific evidence.

"Liberals: Out of the Mainstream and Out of Touch" by Brendan Nyhan

According to Brendan, the Left has been hiding in the Academy for too long. He advocates it's getting out and doing something for a change.

Next issue: Fall '97. Issues will appear twice per semester in print and on the Web.
