VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES






At the PHILADELPHIA COMMITTEE FOR THE HOMELESS (PCH)


        STREET OUTREACH:  Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights,
PCH volunteers bring information, food, and friendship to people living on
the streets of Center City.  The committment is about two-and-a-half hours
of your time each week: 5:45-8:15 on Sunday or Monday, or 6:45-9:15 on
Wednesday or Thursday.  Call David Raeker-Jordan at 232-1823 for more
information.

        FOOD PREPARATION FOR STREET OUTREACH:  On Sundays and Mondays from
4:00-6:00, and 5:00-7:00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays volunteers prepare the
food and drink that is brought out on the street.  
                Also, sandwiches can be delivered to PCH the afternoon of
street outreach.  Two hundred sandwiches are distributed each evening.  If
interested in either, call David at PCH.

        DAY CENTER:  Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00, homeless persons (primarily
men) come to the PCH Day Center to get showers and a change of clothing,
use the telephone, pick up mail, and talk to social workers.  Volunteers
are needed to deliver these services.  Call Larry Watson at 232-2300.

        OFFICE HELP:  The staff would welcome volunteers to help answer the
telephones, contact potential resources, provide data processing skills,
and help out with current projects. Additionally, in the past volunteers
have come up with ideas for new projects.   Call Phyllis Ryan at PCH. 





SHELTERS/TRANSITIONAL HOUSING


        BETHESDA BROAD STREET is a model residential program, providing
social supports as well as a residence for people who have experienced
homelessness and mental illness.  Volunteers are needed for the companion
program, to provide regular one-on-one friendship, help with everyday
tasks, and to ease the adjustment to living in a home and a community.

        MERCY HOSPICE needs volunteers on a flexible basis during the day
(especially in the mornings), in the evenings, and on weekends, to do such
things as help prepare meals, do office work, staff the clothing room.

        THEA WOMEN'S CENTER needs women volunteers to help out on Tuesdays,
Thursdays, and Fridays from 10-4.  The Center has group meetings for women,
as well as regular classes in a variety of topics such as self-care,
nutrition, and relaxation.  Volunteers share their time, presence, and
skills with their sisters.  Call Sister Marti at 739-1137, Tuesday,
Thursday, or Friday from 11-4.

        MY BROTHER'S HOUSE needs volunteers from 9:00-11:30 a.m.,
Monday-Friday, and 6:30-9:00 p.m. Mon-Sun, to help staff the shower and
clothing rooms, work in the kitchen, and to interact with the residents. 
In the winter, My Brother's House has several small shelters that also use
volunteer help.  Call Sr. Kathleen Sonnie at (215) 985-1004.

        PROJECT RAINBOW is a transitional housing program for women and
children; in addition to working in the day-care center, volunteers are
needed to staff the thrift shop, and help with office work and the
maintenance of the building.  Call Edith at 769-1830.





DAY-CARE/HOMELESS CHILDREN/TEENS


        The PHILADELPHIA YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (PYSC) has a one-on-one
Learning Center for the teenagers in PYSC's program, most of whom have
dropped out of high-school.  Volunteer tutors are needed from 8:30-10:30
a.m., Monday-Thursday.  Call Sheryl Haris at (215) 232-0201.

        The CATHOLIC WORKER needs volunteers for its after-school tutoring
program, for 1st-8th graders, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from
3:00-5:00 p.m.  Call (215) 232-7823.

        PROJECT RAINBOW needs volunteers to staff its day-care program
Monday-Friday, 7:30-5:30.  Call (215) 769-1830.

        The PEOPLE'S EMERGENCY CENTER (PEC) needs volunteers to help work
in a learning/day-care center for mothers and pre-school children in West
Philadelphia, from 9:30-12:30, 2:00-4:00 and 5:30-8:30 p.m.  PEC also runs
a tutoring program M-Th, 3:00-5:00.  Call Lorraine Latham at (215)

SOUP KITCHENS

        ST. JOHN'S HOSPICE, the largest soup kitchen, centrally located at
1221 Race Street, serves hundreds of lunches from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. No volunteers are needed for Wednesday.  Call Brother

        ST. FRANCIS INN: this soup kitchen, located in Kensington, serves
Monday through Thursday, 4:30-6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday, 11:30
a.m.-1 p.m.  Call Sr. Mary Augustini at (215) 423-5845.

        TINDLEY TEMPLE, 762 South Broad Street, serves lunches from
11:30-12:30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Call Mrs. Reed at 735-0442.

        CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD, 801 South 11th Street, serves lunches
from 10:30-11:45, Monday through Friday.  Call Mrs. Evans at (215)
922-9661.

        OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS, 1030 North 48th Street, serves lunch from
11:30-12:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, plus holiday meals.  Call
Sr. Peggy at (215) 878-0875.

        CHURCH OF THE ADVOCATE, 18th and Diamond Streets, serves meals from
2:00-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Call Rebecca Chamberlain at (215)
236-0568.
