APDA Nationals 2004 at Swarthmore College

Activities at Nats

The following message was posted to the APDA Forum and Listserv on February 23.

Dear APDA,

Bearing the magisterial title of Director of Fun Activities for Swarthmore Nationals 2004 (for some strange reason this wasn't important enough to put in the original invitation), it is my pleasure to announce what some of our between-rounds entertainment will consist of. We want to make this spring's tournament the best since Swat Nats 2000, and part of a good tournament is having a good time between rounds. We also want to ask for your suggestions and help with determining what that good time consists of. Please post any discussion on the APDA forum rather than emailing me, as that will be both more fruitful for gauging general opinions and less annoying for me. The two exceptions here are registering for dino rounds and sending me pictures. Please note that all scheduling details are tentative and shouldn't be whined about.

1) Dino Rounds

At Swat, we don't plan to repeat the mistakes of Worlds. Don't worry, you'll all be soaked in high-quality alcohol, we will insist that your speeches contain analysis, and you can chew gum and spit as much as you like. However, we have decided to hold Dino rounds between the regular competitive rounds in the manner of Worlds’ Masters tournament, because everyone likes a good grudge match. We'll have one in-round on Saturday and a final round on Sunday during lunch. If you are a dino planning on coming to Nats and you would like to compete, let me know at etredea1. If we get more response from more people than we can fit into the schedule, participation will be based on a first come (ie first response), first served basis. We're also trying to decide what types of resolutions to have--tight for every round, loose for every round, tight for in-rounds but not the final round, vice versa, etc. Since this is for you, dinos, let me know what you want.

2) Movies in GA

Not very innovative, but often tournaments play movies in GA that really suck. Talk about it here if you care, and I'll just choose them if you don't.

3) Junk Food

Mid-April in Pennsylvania is usually warm and sunny, enough so that you'll appreciate free ice-cream hand-scooped by our trusty novices on Saturday afternoon. If it isn't warm and sunny, we'll have either hot chocolate or an uncontrolled brushfire, but not both.

4) Slide Show

We want to play a slide show, probably in GA, of photos that you send me in the next two months. Think humor, nostalgia and publicly discrediting your teammates. While I'll try to include some of everyone, don't think that you can trick me by sending several hundred pictures of yourself from slightly different angles and monopolize the whole show. This means you, Bing.

5) Other

Gilbert wants APDA dodgeball. I want go-go dancers. Enough support for either can make it happen. If you have any other ideas, feel free to mention them here.

So, if you care about any of this and have suggestions, post them for discussion on the forum. If you want to participate in the dino round or have photos to contribute, email me at etredea1@swarthmore.edu. Word.
