Current Debate News:

  • Interested in joining Peaslee Debate? Come to any of our meetings in the Debate Room, Tarble 306, on Monday and Thursday nights at 8:00. Both prospective and current students are welcome to attend regardless of previous debating experience!
  • Mar. 31–Apr. 1 — Thanks to everyone who helped make the Swarthmore Tournament a huge success! We hosted over 60 teams from dozens of colleges. Special thanks go out to Christopher Ford ’07, the Tournament Director, Michael Pollack ’08 and Natalie Bowlus ’08, the Tab Directors, Julie Baker ’08, the Housing Director, Molly Piels ’08, the Food Director, and Trude Raizen ’08, our Treasurer, for helping make the tournament a great time for everyone.
  • Mar. 11 — Christopher Ford ’07 and Julie Baker ’08 cut their Spring Break short to drive the long, winding roads up to Cornell University this weekend and brought back the 7th Varsity Team award.
  • Mar. 4 — Julie Baker ‘08 and Scott Brainard ’09 had slightly heavier luggage flying home after Stanford University’s tournament, together placing as the 5th Varsity Team, with Julie placing as the 5th Varsity Speaker and Scott as the 4th Novice Speaker.
  • Feb. 25 — Christopher Ford ’07 and Julie Baker ’08 came within a few speaker points of breaking at Princeton University’s International Debate Tournament, coming in as the 9th Varsity Team.
  • Feb. 18 — Julie Baker ’08 took the long haul up to Bates College’s tournament and didn’t come back empty-handed, placing (with a hybrid) as the 8th Varsity Team and receiving the 7th Varsity Speaker award.
  • Feb. 11 — Swarthmore dominated the tournament thrown by its neighbor to the north, Bryn Mawr, with Julie Baker ’08 and Ben Warren ’08 taking the 9th Place Varsity Team award, Miles Skorpen ’09 and Alex List ’09 placing as the 2nd Novice Team, and Julie placing as the 5th Varsity Speaker, Miles as the 6th Novice Speaker, and Nick Malinak ’09 placing as 8th Novice Speaker at his first debate tournament!
  • Feb. 4 — Swarthmore debaters boosted their hybrids to top finishes at the NYU International Debate Tournament, with Julie Baker ’08 placing 17th and Christopher Ford ’07 placing 18th out of the nearly 100 Varsity teams.
  • Jan. 28 — Julie Baker ’08 and Molly Piels ’08 were the 14th Varsity Team at the 2006 NorthAms Debate Championship, with Julie also receiving the 9th Place Varsity Speaker award. Congrats!
  • Jan. 21 — Congratulations to Julie Baker ’08 for bringing home the 2nd Place Varsity Speaker award at Rutgers University!
  • Jan. 7 — Congratulations to Christopher Ford ’07, Garth Sheldon-Coulson ’07, Emily Tredeau ’06, Julie Baker ’08, Molly Piels ’08, and Trude Raizen ’08, who competed in the Worlds Debating Championship 2005.
  • Jan. 1 — Peaslee welcomes its new board: President Christopher Ford ’07, Vice-President Julie Baker ’08, Treasurer Trude Raizen ’08, Secretary James Saxon ‘09

Spring 2005 News:

  • Jul. 31 — Many congratulations are in order for the team's performance this past semester. A few highlights:
    • Aviva Aron-Dine '05 finished as 1st place speaker at the APDA National Championships, affirming what many already knew. Sonya Hoo '05 was 13th place speaker, and the two together were 5th team. Congratulations!
    • Julie Baker '08 was 3rd Novice of the Year. She picked up a breathtaking fifteen novice speaker awards and three varsity speaker awards during the course of her freshman year.
    • Aviva was 1st speaker at Yale, the second-largest tournament of the semester.
    • Aviva and Emily Tredeau '06 were 1st place team at Princeton, the largest tournament of the semester. Aviva was 5th speaker.
    • Aviva and Jon Bateman (Hopkins) were 3rd team at UVA. Emily and Garth Sheldon-Coulson '07 were 6th team.
    • Christopher Ford '07 was 4th speaker at Bryn Mawr.
    • Trude Raizen '08 was 9th novice at NorthAms.

Fall 2004 News:

  • Nov. 14 — Congratulations to Swat's novices for an outstanding showing at the University of Pennsylvania's tournament this weekend! Novice team awards went to Julie Baker '08 & Daniel Putnam '08 (1st), Tom Emmons '08 & Michael Pollack '08 (3rd), Max Parke '08 & Ben Warren '08 (4th), and Corlett Wood '08 & JeeYoung Oh '08 (6th). Novice speaker awards went to Julie (1st), Sam Asarnow '08 (6th), and Corlett (8th). Additionally, Julie also finished as the 6th overall speaker for the entire tournament.

  • Nov. 8 — Congratulations to Julie Baker '08 and James Casey '08 for finishing as the 2nd place novice team at George Washington University's tournament this weekend! In addition, Chris Ford '07 took the 7th place speaker award and Julie also took the 3rd place novice speaker award.

  • Oct. 31 — Congratulations to Chris Ford '07 and Garth Sheldon-Coulson '07 for finishing as the 9th place team at American University's tournament this weekend, and to Julie Baker '08 and Molly Piels '08 for finishing as the 10th place team at the tournament! In addition, Julie and Molly finished as the 1st place novice team, and the two took 1st and 3rd place novice speaker awards, respectively.

  • Oct. 23 — Congratulations to Natalie Bowlus '08 and Michael Pollack '08 for finishing as the 5th place novice team at Columbia's tournament this weekend!

  • Oct. 17 — Congratulations to Aviva Aron-Dine '05 and Sonya Hoo '05 for finishing 3rd out of 157 teams at Harvard's tournament this weekend! In addition, they were one of just five teams with a 5-0 record in inrounds, and Aviva also took the 11th place speaker award.

  • Oct. 7 — Congratulations to Julie Baker '08 and Trude Raizen '08 for finishing as the 3rd place novice team at UMBC's tournament this weekend! In addition, Julie also took the 6th place novice speaker award.

  • Sep. 26 — The results from Swat Novice have been posted online. Congratulations to Sunny Xu '08 and Randall McAuley '08 for breaking to quarterfinals and finishing as the 8th place team, and to Corlett Wood '08 and JeeYoung Oh '08 for finishing as the 9th place team! Corlett also finished as the third place speaker for the tournament.

  • Sep. 20 — Congratulations to Aviva Aron-Dine '05 and Sonya Hoo '05 for finishing as the 4th place team at Haverford this weekend, and to Michael Pollack '08 and Sam Asarnow '08 for finishing as the 1st place novice team! Aviva and Sonya were also ranked as the 5th and 7th top speakers at the tournament, respectively, and Julie Baker '08 and Sam took the 1st and 3rd place novice speaker awards, respectively.

  • Sep. 15 — We have posted the invitation for this year's Swat Novice Tournament on the APDA Forum.

  • Aug. 31 — We'll be holding a demonstration round tonight at 8:00 in Science Center 199 for anyone interested in learning more about what debate at Swat is all about.

Spring 2004 News:

  • Apr. 26 — Peaslee has elected a new president for the Fall 2004 semester, Maria Macia '07.

  • Apr. 16 — Class of 2008: The Peaslee Debate Society will be holding a demonstration round for all interested prospective students at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21 in Science Center 199. Come check us out!

  • Mar. 11 — Congratulations to Sonya Hoo '05 and Gilbert Lee of Princeton for finishing as the 3rd place team at Temple this weekend! Sonya and Gilbert were undefeated in in-rounds and were the highest breaking team at the tournament. Congratulations also to Lake Bookman '07 for finishing as the 7th place novice speaker at Temple!

  • Feb. 29 — Congratulations to Sonya Hoo '05 and Emily Tredeau '06 for breaking to semifinals and finishing as the 3rd place team at Princeton's tournament this weekend! Congratulations also to Lake Bookman '07 for taking the 8th place novice speaker award at Princeton!

  • Feb. 21 — Congratulations to Swarthmore's novices for an excellent showing at William & Mary this weekend! Susan Zell '07 and Michael Drezner '07 finished as the 4th place novice team, and Stef Wong '07 and Maria Macia '07 finished as the 9th and 10th place novice speakers, respectively.

  • Feb. 10 — Congratulations to Chris Ford '07 and Garth Sheldon-Coulson '07 for finishing as the 3rd place novice team at NYU this weekend! Chris also took the 4th place novice speaker award.

  • Jan. 25 — Congratulations to Swarthmore's teams for an excellent showing at Haverford this weekend! Sonya Hoo '05 and Aviva Aron-Dine '05 broke to semifinals and took the 4th place team award, and Chris Ford '07 and Garth Sheldon-Coulson '07 finished as the 2nd place novice team. Additionally, Sonya was the tournament's 3rd place speaker and Aviva was the 7th place speaker. Chris was the 2nd place novice speaker, Garth was 4th novice speaker, and Lake Bookman '07 was 7th novice speaker.

  • Jan. 3 — Congratulations to both Swarthmore teams for an outstanding showing at the World Universities Debating Championships in Singapore this week! Aviva Aron-Dine '05 and Sonya Hoo '05 finished with 17 points, just missing the break by one point and ending as the 5th highest ranked American team at Worlds (out of 37 teams), and 56th at the tournament overall (out of 307 teams). Ian Sulam '05 and Emily Tredeau '06 finished with 16 points, making them the 11th highest ranked American team, and the 78th overall.
