How do I get student members for my new committee? top
Please contact the Appointments Chair with the following information before Spring Break for Spring Appointments, or Fall Break for Fall Appointments. (With advertising, applications, scheduling interviews, and decision making, we cannot honor last minute requests and do our job thoroughly and fairly.)
- What is the full name of your committee? Who is the chair?
- Give us a brief description of your committee.
- What does it do? How often does it meet? When does it meet?
- What the length of each appointment?
- When do you want students appointed? How many for Fall? How many for Spring?
- Do your student members need to meet certain qualifications?
The Appointments Chair will work with you to find the most qualified and motivated student members for your committee.
How can I accommodate student schedules? top
Generally, committees have a set meeting time which does not vary each year or they pick a new meeting time to accommodate members' schedules. We have found that the best way to accommodate student schedules is to have a set meeting time for each year that does not change. If you tell us that meeting time, we will advertise it during appointments, so that only students who can meet at that time will apply.
If that is not possible, please try to schedule meeting times after students have their class schedules set. This means scheduling meeting times after the first two weeks of classes for each semester.
It is very important to us that student members are treated as equally as possible by other committee members, especially when it comes to selecting meeting times. Each student member is appointed to a committee because he or she is the best qualified for that committee. Students cannot be reassigned to another committee and we do not do another round of appointments if there are schedule conflicts.
What do I do if student members are not attending meetings? top
If the student has confirmed that the meeting time does not conflict with a class or other important activity and still does not make your meetings, please contact the Appointments Chair. The Appointments Chair will contact the student to see if there is a misunderstanding. However, the Appointments Committee would like to be aware if a student is consistently missing meetings and does not have an excuse, because we do not want to appoint that person again.
How do I change when student members are appointed? top
If you want to change anything about the appointments of your committee, contact the Appointments Chair. We will work with you to make the best arrangement for your committee.
Can a committee member be present for the interviews? top
Often, we invite the committee chair to join us during the interview process. If you cannot be present, a designated experienced committee member can also serve as a representative of your committee. While the representative does not have a vote, input from the committee representative is highly valued. Having a committee representative present helps us to make the best decision because we can be informed of the committee's needs. If you would like a committee member present, take the initiative and contact the Appointments Chair. Otherwise, chairs will be invited at our discretion. However, keep in mind that we do not always hold interviews.
