G GUNDAM
Reviewed by Dan Peterson
Synopsis
All right, time for me to review the rest of the Gundam universe! So, after enjoying Gundam Wing despite Cartoon Network, I decided to give G Gundam a shot. Basically, G Gundam is a major departure from every other Gundam series ever created. Whereas many of them take place in an era of war with a whole interstellar conflict waging in the background, G Gundam is clearly the creators of Gundam feeling the pressure put on them by the success of shows like Dragonball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho where the basis is one-on-one fighting instead of an all-out battle. The premise of the show is that every year every country sends a giant robot to fight the other giant robots of other countries in a tournament to decide the ruler of the world for the coming couple of years. The series follows Domon Kashu, pilot from Neo Japan, in his quest to win the tournament.
PLOT: 65%
The plot twists do very little to surprise anyone. A long-lost evil brother? How could we ever have seen THAT one coming? The female mechanic of Domon’s Gundam might become his love interest? Who would have guessed? It is a lot of fun, and the fight scenes are well-done, but the show’s unsurprising nature would motivate me to take a nap before it motivated me to stay tuned for the next episode.
CHARACTERS: 80%
Despite a plot that doesn’t do them real justice, I must say that overall the characters are well done. Granted, most of them are stereotypes and caricatures of the countries they are supposed to represent, but that doesn’t stop you from caring about them or thinking that they’re really cool guys. Sure, they don’t hold a candle to our boys from Gundam Wing, but they’re definitely better than the characters developed in many other earlier Gundam series.
ART: 75%
For the time, I’m sure it was amazing. For our time, it’s still pretty darn good. The colors look decent, and the Gundams look pretty cool…for the most part. It was definitely hit or miss in this series when it came to Gundam design as it introduced some of the most bizarre Gundams the Gundam Universe has ever seen. I seem to remember thinking how cool the Gundam from Turkey looked, and I loved the Chinese Gundam and Canadian Gundam, but the Indian Gundam that looked like a snake, the Gundam from Holland that looked like a windmill, and the Gundam from Iceland that had a Viking longboat for its lower half just looked ridiculous.
SOUNDTRACK: 70%
Decent, forgettable, but helpful. The songs added to the mood without being too distracting, and the theme song, while not the best I’ve ever heard, was certainly not the worst by any means.
CONCLUSION: 71% Overall
A good series that, had a few things been changed, could have been a great one.
