CHRNO CRUSADE
Reviewed by Dan Peterson
Synopsis
Nuns with guns…need I say more? For this series, yes, yes I do. Basically, there’s a group of nuns called the Magdalene Order based in New York City that hunt down demons. One particular nun, Rosette, is a special case: she’s got a former demon named Chrno as her partner. Together, they must stop the forces of darkness led by Aion, a demon with an evil plan for our planet and a dark past with Chrno.
PLOT: 80%
For the first two thirds of the series, wow! The plot was very well-done, balancing humor and darkness well. The back stories of the characters are revealed little by little, and everyone, even our bad guys, are very well-developed. There are twists and turns every couple of steps, and then…it ends, very unsatisfactorily, I might add. Were it not for the sub par ending with its anticlimactic battle, I would have given the plot a solid 9 or higher, but as it is….
CHARACTERS: 85%
Come on, who doesn’t love nuns with guns? Rosette and her brother Joshua are very well-developed, and Chrno and Rosette’s relationship evolves beautifully. You also come to care for other characters like the whiny Azmaria and the gorgeous Satella, and, even though it makes you feel bad for doing it, for the evil and villainous Aion. All in all, great characters, though once again, the ending of the series ruins the great strides the series had made.
ART: 85%
Personally, I loved the art in this series. The demons are drawn amazingly well, plus the atmosphere and the colors create a dark and brooding atmosphere that I love. However, the juxtaposition of cutesy characters like Azmaria and Rosette in this dark setting can be a bit much at times, and I wish that they had been drawn just a wee bit as dark as background.
SOUNDTRACK: 60%
Eh. Not really anything to write home about as far as the soundtrack goes. There are some animes that have theme songs that get stuck in your head for days or that make you want to download the theme song off the internet. This is not one of those animes. The music in the show is decent, but once again nothing that will catch your attention to any great degree.
CONCLUSION: 77% Overall
A good series that, had a few things been changed, could have been a great one.
