A tale of two lamps…..

Hear ye, hear ye,

with dread we announceth the downfall of our good lad the Temporary Projector, Esquire.

After a short and intense battle while standing its fallen brother’s ground (the late Sir Original Projector) it fell to weakness of its lamp essence.

But, we have called upon the witches and demons of BenQ Support who will use their magic powers to send us a new one post haste.

During these winter months while you are pining away with no audiovisual diversions from your studies, we humbly beg your forgiveness and hope beyond hope that the fixed projector shall return to the front lines ere January.

We bid you adieu,

The Curators of SCCS

Monday downtime

We’re having planned downtime tomorrow (31 October 2011) from 6pm-8pm to try and fix some issues with a not-very-uninterruptible power supply. We expect this downtime to last less than 30 minutes but to be safe you should expect us to be inaccessible (both via the web and SSH) as long as until 8pm.

We are proud to announce the introduction of our brand new internal task management system, GUTS, or the Grand Unified Task System.

This replaces the older system, Los, as the way to request SCCS accounts, mailing lists, org web pages, source control repositories, and more to come.

We haz GUTS!New features:

  • New interface (hopefully easier to use)
  • Git repositories!
  • Fewer security holes

GUTS is live at guts.sccs. Let us know (staff@sccs.swarthmore.edu) if anything is amiss.

FIFA 12 In Video Pit/FIFA 12 Campus League

Hello Everyone!

SCCS has special news for those with an unhealthy/healthy addiction to FIFA.

If you are a FIFA veteran, or someone who has just heard of it, get to the game pit to play the new FIFA 12. I promise you it will be worth your while.

A bit of secondary news, I have been asking around campus to get a FIFA League started for fun. If I gather enough interest, I will create a mailing list, and we can go from there. You can email me at kaka2210@sccs.swarthmore.edu

ENJOY!!!

Possible outages this weekend

Hurricane Irene is expected to hit southeastern Pennsylvania late Saturday night, and Chester County’s under a tropical storm warning (see http://live.psu.edu/story/54712).  Between the 60 mph winds perhaps knocking down power lines to the school and the 4-8 inches of rain potentially causing the server room to flood, there’s a good chance we’ll be unavailable at some point this weekend.  Unlike SEPTA, though, we promise to go down fighting.

If/when SCCS goes down, this website and all of the websites we host will be unavailable, mailing lists will stop working, and in the case of a school-wide outage all SCCS email will stop working as well.  Be forewarned that the downtime could be as long as all of Sunday, though we’ll do our best to be online again as soon as possible.  See you on the other side!

Updated: Sun’s shining, rain’s passed – looks like power/internet should be fine from here on out.  Aaaand the all-time results, water damage to SCCS:

  • Hurricane Irene: 0
  • Ville kid with powerade: 1

Swipe Into SCCS

The new RFID scanner by the pit

We’ve just finished a yearlong project of getting RFID scanners installed for the lounge and the pit. You can now swipe in with your Swarthmore ID. This helps make us more available to you, and also more secure against theft and vandalism.

You can swipe in now to either the lounge or the pit during the same hours that we would have been open before. We’re working on new policies for pit access, including possibly 24/7 access for people with SCCS accounts. Look for an update sometime in the fall.
