So you want to join SCCS?
We’re recruiting about 3-4 new staff members for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year (we wish we could take everyone, but we have to limit our size since all staff members have unrestricted access to our systems). The application process for joining SCCS is simple:
- Apply by sending responses to the questions below to staff@sccs.swarthmore.edu by 9pm on Friday, 5 October 2012.
- We sign you up for an evening interview slot sometime Tuesday-Thursday (10/9-10/11) the following week, given your availability.
- You come to SCCS at that time for a short, friendly 10-minute interview – it’s a chance to meet us and learn more about what we do.
- By the end of the week, we let you know if you’ll be joining us!
What Staff Members Do
In general, we keep our servers and spaces running smoothly, fix problems when they arise, and plan and work on new technology projects to improve the lives of the Swarthmore student body. And of course, we also have a great time getting to know each other (read: swapping terrible jokes) and learning about computers and system administration! Being an SCCS staff member involves the following commitments:
- Attending weekly meetings from 7-8pm on Monday night (this is possibly open to change, but we’d REALLY like to be able to keep this time)
- Responding to emails sent to staff@sccs.swarthmore.edu
- Being available to help if servers go down
- In general, all the responsibility that comes with sudo
Being a staff member is a volunteer job. However, there are a lot of perks! It’s a great opportunity to learn and gain real-world experience about system administration and work on projects that have meaning to the Swarthmore community at large.
