Likely downtime for Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hits sometime tonight (Sunday 10/28) or tomorrow morning, bringing torrential rain and high winds that will almost certainly take out the College’s power/internet at some point between now and Tuesday afternoon. Risks to life and limb aside, the important consequence of this for you, dear user, is that SCCS will go down when that happens for an indeterminate length of time (perhaps as much as 48 hours, but hopefully less). Consider it a portent of the apocalypse.

Want further evidence of impending doom? Swarthmore College actually canceled classes because of the weather – for the first time in at least 34 years. So gather your families. Stockpile food and weapons. Stay safe. And don’t miss us too much – we’ll be back soon, providing you with lolcats til the fall of civilization.

Hello World!

As you may or may not have heard, SCCS is hiring new members for the 2012-2013 academic year!

If you think that you have what it takes to work on awesome projects such as GUTS (Grand Unified Task-Management System) and then write a paper about it (which we did, look here). Or if you want to learn everything about UNIX system administration that you ever wanted to know. Or if you want to simply help tons of users with their problems and make their days, this might just be the moment you have been waiting for: Apply now by clicking the “Join SCCS” link at the top of the page or clicking right here, and reading through the Pre-Interview questions and commitments that come with being an SCCS systems administrator.

If that just made you even more excited, then send the completed questionnaire to staff@sccs.swarthmore.edu by 6:30pm on Monday, October 1st! This is so we can get all you new members hired and settled in before fall break.

The printers work…. again!

After a brief outage, both the color and black and white printers are fully operational again!

If you continue to have trouble printing, please check the printer queue under System Preferences (the cog in the Mac OS X dock) > Printers & Scanners. You will see both printers in the left-hand list. If either of them has an orange light, with the indication “paused” underneath it, click on the printer and then click on “Printer Queue” in the right-hand side of the screen. This will open a new window in which you have to click on the button “Resume”.

This should fix the problem.

Internet and Printing Restored

We are happy to announce that after extensive maintenance on our network hardware, we were able to restore internet and printing to the main lounge as of 5:00 PM Saturday. Return of the Game Pit!

We are pleased to announce that after a long saga of heartbreak and disappointment, we have purchased and installed a brand new projector in the SCCS game pit. The new projector is an Epson 8350.

The pit is now operational again, ready and waiting to serve you in all your gaming needs. Come check it out, and tell us about any issues at staff@sccs.swarthmore.edu.

P.S. We put a lot of work into cleaning the pit during the installation. Please leave it as clean or cleaner than you find it!

Cygnet blackout for internet strike day

Hi everyone!

Today SCCS is taking part in an internet-wide strike day against SOPA/PIPA by blacking out photos on the Cygnet. In case you haven’t heard, SOPA/PIPA is anti-piracy intellectual property legislation currently under consideration in Congress that has been widely condemned as internet censorship.

We stand with Wikipedia, Google, WordPress, Facebook, Reddit, and countless other web companies and online communities that care too much about the freedom and openness of the Internet to watch SOPA/PIPA pass without taking action. And you can help us! Contact your congresspeople at this site to let them know you oppose the bills:

Dec. 29-30 planned downtime

The campus will be turning off power during the evening of Thursday, 12/29/11, around 6pm EST, so SCCS will be going down. Hopefully SCCS will then be going back up once power is restored. If the servers don’t manage to reboot properly, the downtime may last a bit longer since no SCCS staff are on campus, but we’ll do our best to be back up one way or another by the end of Friday.
